Collect

  • 55% of population is provided with sewage network¹;

  • Almost 100 million Brazilians (45%) do not have access to sewage collection.

  • About 13 million children and adolescents do not have access to sanitation facilities²;

  • 3,1% of children and adolescents do not have a toilet in their houses;

  • 34 municipalities among the 100 largest cities in Brazil have more than 90% of their population are provided with sewage network3.

  • In Brazil, the proportion of municipalities with sewage network increased from 47,3% in 1989 to 60,3% in 20174.

Numbers by region

  • North provides a sewage network to 13,1% (2,3 milions of the population ¹;

  • Northeast provides a sewage network to 30,3% (16,9 milions) of the population¹;

  • Southeast provides a sewage network to 80,5% (71,4 milions) of the population¹;

  • South provides a sewage network to 47,4% (14,3 milions)  of the population¹;

  • Midwest provides a sewage network to 59,5% (9,7 milions)  of the population ¹.

Wasterwater tratment

  • 50,8% of the country's wastewater is treated¹.

  • SOnly 18 municipalities among the 100 largest cities in the country treat more than 80% of wastewater treated³..

  • In 2020, the percentage of untreated wastewater represented 5,3 million Olympic swimming pools dumped into nature.

  • 21,4%  of wastewater is treated in the North¹.
  • 34,1% of wastewater is treated in the Northeast¹.
  • 58,6% of wastewater is treated in the Southeast¹.
  • 46,7% of wastewater is treated in the South¹.
  • 58,5% of wastewater is treated in the Midwest¹.
